📰 TL;DR - We’ve all heard the phrase “all press is good press” and whether or not that’s true, it leaves little room for nuance. Take, for example, this past weekend’s latest disaster turned social media moment: Burning Man 2023.
If you haven’t heard, the eclectic art festival hosted in a remote Nevada lake bed recently felt the onslaught of heavy rains which turned the Black Rock Desert into a mess of mud and flooding. The social media moment? Memes on memes about the rumored misfortunes of attendees who historically have included celebrities, influencers, and well-known billionaires.
💡 Insight - At face value, the memes of people making fun of attendees for spending large sums of money on attending a physically challenging event seem like a bad thing for the brand. But are these people making fun and critiquing the event actually impacting sales?
The general public isn’t the audience for Burning Man. And Burning Man’s audience isn’t phased by nature’s unexpected impact on this year’s festival. Dedicated consumers will keep coming back if you service them, not the masses.
The same can be said about positive perception. If your product goes viral, that’s cool. But if it goes viral and doesn’t lead to dedicated customers, did it really matter? Focus on your consumer’s perception and you’ll actually move the line.
