🗞 TL;DR - Mark Meyerson and his team ran 54 Google Ads experiments over two years on one lead gen (non-eCommerce) account to test various features, including bidding techniques, keyword match types, campaign setting adjustments, and ad copy changes. The findings resulted in three key findings, summarized below.
💡 Insight - In testing exact match vs phrase match, exact match keywords performed better on all criteria when compared to phrase match. They had lower CPAs and higher conversion rates while maintaining similar conversion volumes to phrase-match keywords.
When it came to maximizing conversions bidding against a target CPA strategy, the targeted CP strategy always outperformed and drove more leads at the same cost. However, when the maximize conversions feature was run against manual bidding, maximize conversions performed better.
Lastly, in testing target CPA vs target CPA at different levels, approximately half of the target CPA experiments failed, and half succeeded. This seems to show that the optimal target CPA is one that maximizes leads within your budget – find your own optimal target CPA, as they may vary from campaign to campaign.
