💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in NYC. Many brands and personalities will be using the day to commemorate and honor the memories of the day – but do you need to? PR Daily has a helpful guide on how to navigate the day as a brand.
💡 Insight - Some brands do have an expectation to post. If your organization has a deep connection to 9/11 or you’re a public service organization that connects with relevant communities, then you should plan to post a tasteful, simple response. That means: no branding, no tie-in to sales, and avoid imagery depicting the actual attacks.
But honestly, most companies don’t need to post. As PR Daily notes, “You have nothing to gain by making a statement and much more to lose… very few will notice if you remain silent – but many will notice if you get it wrong.” When in doubt, just take the day off from posting. It’s okay not to say anything.
And to be completely safe, it’s always best to avoid promoting products or sales on a day like today. This isn’t an opportunity to sell anything or put your brand into the public conversation. Take a note from brands who have done this poorly in the past (looking at you, AT&T) and avoid having to apologize for the campaigns by not running them in the first place.
