💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Does your brand operate globally? Most software and eCommerce businesses have a worldwide reach these days, yet many operating teams are U.S.-based. If this sounds like you, have you assessed how your brand shows up in searches around the world? It’s a common oversight, which is why Search Engine Journal dove into the key differences between the impact each region’s internet regulations have on the search experience.
💡 Insight - The big difference between the American and European search experience is the European Union’s Digital Marketing Act (DMA). It’s a gatekeeping regulation that doesn’t allow companies to force defaults on users, show their offering above other marketplace participants, and serve targeted ads without consent. The tools most significantly impacted by this are Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Bytedance, Meta, and Microsoft.
Since the EU fined Google in September for demoting price comparison sites in Product Listing Ads (PLAs), Google has shown a box with links to price comparison sites for shopping, hotel, and flight searches. For travel and lodging, the SERP in the EU seems to favor online travel agencies over hotel brands and airlines. This is due to Google’s demotion of its own Hotel and Flight SERP feature after it was deemed “self-preferencing” under the DMA.
Even with Google requiring EU users to choose a default search engine on Android and Chrome, the impact of the DMA on Google seems pretty minimal. Google seems to be able to anticipate at this point which new features may lead to a DMA violation, so they’re just not launching in those places. That said, while tracking and new features may be less existent in Europe, leaning into SEO tactics and tricks is still useful in attracting audiences through search no matter the locale.
