💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - I’m gonna try not to sound like a geriatric millennial, but Gen Z slang isn’t exactly intuitive. It’s not just them, we millennials also had our confusing phrases and weird sayings (I’m personally guilty of ‘doggo’ and ‘adulting’). But before you go trying to use Gen Z’s phrases and risking the public ridicule of a misstep, EMarketer gathered a few explanations of some common phrases.

💡 Insight - Here are some of the top Gen Z phrases I think you should know:

  • Ick: If something gives you ‘the ick,’ it’s a red flag. This is a flaw or bad feature.

  • Mother: An influential, culture-shaping icon. Keep in mind that this term, like much of online language, is derived from Black and Latino LGBT+ slang.

  • Mid: Just okay. If your brand is mid, consider it boring.

  • Delulu: Short for delusional. Can be used literally, as in when making fun of a brand, or positively, like when you’re intentionally being delusional to manifest something happening.

  • -Coded or -Core: These are suffixes that suggest something is taking on the traits of the prefix. For example, something that’s ‘cottagecore’ is often soft, minimal, literary.

  • Rizz: Short for charisma. Essentially having confidence or, translated into millennial terms, swagger.
