💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - With the proliferation of TikTok’s For You Page (FYP), it’s very possible these days to miss a viral trend entirely due to what the algorithm decides (or decides not to) show you. So, here we’ll explain the current major TikTok topics trending among younger generations and what marketers need to know about them.
💡 Insight - First up, Brat and brat summer. Brat is the latest album by British pop artist Charli XCX (also of ‘I Love It’ circa 2012 fame). The album and its iconic lime green, helvetica-font cover have become a whole trend in itself, inspiring people to embrace a ‘brat summer’ – chaos, joy, and maybe a little messiness. Brands can try to embody their own ‘brat summer,’ but if it feels forced, don’t push it. You don’t want to be that out-of-touch cringe brand.
Confused about the coconut emojis everywhere around U.S. VP Kamala Harris? Here’s where it started: a speech from Harris went viral where she famously says, “you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.” When Harris announced her run for vice presidency, this quote was revived and many have started to announce their support for her saying they’re “coconut-pilled.” Brands typically should stay away from any political conversation, meme or not – but this can be a subtle nod toward Harris’ candidacy.
We’ve already talked about underconsumption core, but it’s impossible to do a list of current trends without talking about it. Like de-influencing before it, underconsumption core revolts against the overconsumption pushed by influencers and creators. Brands should embrace that, while some people will be anti-consumption, there’s still a place for good products and brand loyalty.
