📰 TL;DR: According to a new survey of 4,800 small business professionals, 51% of American SMB owners aren’t interested in digitalization. That doesn’t just mean digitalized systems within their own business (like CRMs or financial systems), it can literally mean no website, no email, no social media. Thinking about the mom & pop coffee shop down the street in my hometown that’s been in operation since 1970 without changing owners…
Many cite costs, lack of time or education, and inflation for reasons why they haven’t invested, but amongst American SMBs, many think cybersecurity concerns are a reason for avoiding the modernization. European SMBs, on the other hand, felt confident about their cybersecurity.
💡 Insight: I think we can learn something from this oversimplification. You might want to ask yourself from time to time, are your digitalization efforts useful or overkill?
As growth marketers, we often can take digitalization to the extreme – adding AI, optimizing our web traffic, crafting a robust marketing funnel. Meanwhile there are businesses out here truly just surviving on vibes and luck.
Of course, these businesses need to digitize before becoming extinct to an increasingly digital generation. But that coffee shop in my hometown is still packed every weekend from 8am-2pm because they’re focused first on providing a consistently good product.
Can I do a simple internet search to check if they’re open this weekend for me to get that good product? Not reliably, which is where their problem lies. But I’ll keep going back because while it might not be the highest SEO ranked egg & cheese around, it’s a damn good one.
