🚀 Today’s Deep Dive 🚀

📰 TL;DR - For eCommerce and SaaS businesses, app user retention is a tough challenge. A challenge that language learning app Duolingo has seemed to hack by heavily pushing users into their ‘streak’ feature. Essentially, users are motivated to maintain consistent daily app usage by doing their daily language lessons, gaining extra points with extra practice, and ascending the app’s leaderboards.

The feature is so successful, Duolingo’s achieved a record 17 million daily active users. Apps like Busuu and Drops have also seen success since adding their own streaks features with a nearly 3 million session count increase between both apps. Busuu experienced a 15% surge in total sessions within just one month.

💡 Insight - We’re all addicted to maintaining a perfect record, especially if it’s against others. Brands can (and should!) lean into this wherever possible.

Of course streaks and gamification aren’t going to fit for every business. But if you think about it in a broad sense, you might be able to get creative with making it work for your industry. Think about coffee shops with punch card reward systems – they’re rewarding customers for their consistent business.

Loyalty goes a long way, and sometimes people just need that little reminder. Duolingo’s passive-aggressive, sassy notifications aren’t for everyone, but they definitely help them stand apart from the competition and encourage users to maintain their streak. Speaking of, I should probably go do a lesson right now 😬
