💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Facebook may be for old people nowadays, but Facebook Marketplace is still attracting Gen Z. The yard-sale-esque feature on the platform is keeping younger adults on the social network with its ability to provide good deals and interesting second-hand finds. So, how can brands lean into the magic Meta’s creating?
💡 Insight - You don’t need to actually be on Marketplace to capture the essence of what’s driving buyers to the platform. The magic of the platform tool is that it leans into Gen Z’s love of thrifting vintage or secondhand items. Younger generations love vintage and MCM (midcentury modern) styles. Brands may benefit from leaning into similar styles and crafting a visual presence that resonates with what Gen Z likes.
Marketplace buyers noted how the platform allows you to “make offers and negotiate with people, so you’re always going to pay way less than retail.” This deal-driven mentality is consistent with other studies on Gen Z buying habits. They love getting a deal, but they also love products that are high-quality and have value (older, solid vintage pieces often fall into this category, too).
Lastly, brands may benefit from looking at Meta’s response to the whole phenomenon. Meta uses a natural point of entry for the younger generation to introduce them to other parts of the network (by advertising Marketplace finds on the Facebook timeline or by allowing easy sharing with friends through Facebook Messenger). Instead of forcing users into an area that doesn’t immediately resonate with them, start with an easy entry point. Then, slowly point them where you want them.
