🚀 Today’s Deep Dive 🚀

📰 TL;DR - Certain products are always going to sell. People will always need groceries. They’ll always need home appliances. People will keep having weddings and babies and those big life events will need products that retailers can sell. But the retailers selling are starting to look a little different.

Etsy announced this week that they’re entering the baby market with a new baby registry tool on the platform. The move comes after finding shoppers have searched for a baby item on their website every second for the past six months. The feature is an extension of Etsy’s wedding registry tool, launched in May, allowing couples to register for the site’s collection of artisan and custom gifts.

💡 Insight - People will always have a need for certain products, but why do they need your product over all the other options?

It’s not just about the product specifically. Take, for example, Etsy’s baby products. Functionally, a baby toy you’re buying from Target, Babies R Us, or Amazon isn’t much different from the one you’re buying from a vendor on Etsy. But emotionally and aesthetically, they can be the complete opposite.

It’s about how the product (and the purchasing process) makes the consumer feel. Obviously not a revolutionary concept, but Etsy’s success here shows how a consumer association with a specific product (custom, hand-made, small batch) can create competition with an industry’s heavy hitters.

As consumer interests waver towards smaller retailers and less mainstream options, the Etsy vendors of the world might have an upper hand…
