🚀 Today’s Deep Dive 🚀

📰 TL;DR - For reasons we can’t totally explain, the nostalgia of the early 2000s has had a chokehold on Gen Z… and as millennials who grew up during this time, we’re all eating it up too. There’s truly nothing like a trip to the mall in your low-rise denim listening to *NSYNC on cassette.

But whatever the reason, brands are taking note and heading back in time. Walmart’s the latest culprit with their Y2K “Summer Rewind” experience appearing in in-store parking lots in 33 cities across the U.S. The experience is free (but requires an RSVP) and is billed as a “playground for grown-ups” bringing consumers back to their childhood with activities we were never allowed to do growing up.

💡 Insight - Could your brand exist in 1999-2009? If so, this is your chance to have fun with a popular trend! Brands like Vacation and LLBean have leaned into the nostalgia vibe over the years without sacrificing their brand mission. Don’t force it, but get creative if you can.

If you can’t join them, learn from them. The thing that gets people so hyped about Y2K and nostalgia is how it makes them feel. And how it connects brands through popular culture (which never goes out of style). Take a note from marketer Brianne Fleming and start integrating nostalgia & pop culture into your strategy.
