💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Social platforms really, really want consumers to buy on their apps, but such segmented shopping experiences have led to slower adoption of retail behavior – at least in Western markets. Social Media Today analyzed data from eMarketer to understand the current state of social shopping.

💡 Insight - According to eMarketer’s data, over 6 in 10 social shoppers have bought something via Facebook in the past 12 months – double the rate of TikTok and Instagram. That said, the study doesn’t specify where people made a purchase, which gives a major advantage to Facebook Marketplace and secondhand listings.

In terms of shopping frequency, the data shows that people who regularly use Snapchat and Reddit are more likely to make regular purchases in each respective app. So, while Facebook may have more users (and thus more total sales), these apps are often better at highlighting relevant products or converting consumers in general with useful content.

That said, shoppers in the U.S. or U.K. often gravitate more toward shopping platforms themselves, like Amazon or LTK. However, younger consumers, who are growing up with the conveniences of social shopping, may usher in a more accepted, regular use of shopping via social platforms.
