💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - SEO thrives on longevity, so planning a new website can almost feel like a losing battle to compete for search ranking. But it’s vitally important to keep SEO in mind when planning out your next website as you want to show up for success as early on as possible. Search Engine Land lists out the things you can to maximize SEO success from day one and make it easier to keep improving along the way.

💡 Insight - Search Engine Land claims there are five key steps to craft an SEO-friendly website blueprint:

  1. Understand existing rankings and where your traffic may come from. You can do this by looking in Google Analytics and Google Search Console to identify high-ranking keywords, high-traffic keywords and content, and high-opportunity pages and keywords.

  2. Establish your SEO and website goals. Ideally these will be hierarchical and broken down into sub-goals. Keep them specific and measurable, and consider establishing anti-goals (aka things you want to avoid with the new site).

  3. Define your audience and customer segments. Remember: targeting everyone is targeting no one. Identify your demographics, then ask: What is the problem or goal of the target audience? Where do they hang out or find information online?

  4. Build out your sitemap and structure. This should be a visual overview of the new site as actioned through your new goals. This is also where bad ideas can die, before you enter costly development. Use your favorite drawing tool to map it out, and create it based on target audiences and objectives.

  5. Scope out your pages, SEO specifics, and website plan. This is where you’ll get into the nitty gritty of determining what content will be on each page and ensure content supports each page’s goal. Make note of external backlinks needed, and craft a plan on how to maintain the new site. Don’t just leave it to the web developers – own the process to ensure your own success.
