💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - The trend of ‘Buy Now’ buttons is just about 10 years old, but did you know it started with Twitter? Twitter was one of the first social networks to launch a ‘Buy’ button with eCommerce integrations including Shopify, WooCommerce, and more. In studying the lessons from Twitter and other networks, we can better understand how content and thoughtful planning can help marketers make the most of those ‘Buy’ buttons.
💡 Insight - While Twitter may have been the first to launch the feature, Instagram figured out the secret formula: combine great content with easy-to-access buying options. By taking a content-led approach, brands on Instagram don’t come off as sales-y and instead, consumers are influenced to buy based on seeing the product in real action.
Pinterest, another highly visual social network, followed Instagram’s formula and found success in commerce by pushing social proof. According to statistics, 90% of Pinterest users admit to being in a shopping mindset while using the platform – which makes the platform perfect for setting brands up to show off their product and make a sale.
These platforms lean deeply into psychology to make users want to buy – convenience, instant gratification, scarcity mindset, FOMO, and emotional shopping. Being on these platforms gives marketers a step up.
But to craft a strong strategy around ‘Buy Now’ buttons, you should copy the product strategy that made you successful in the first place. Customers want great content and an even greater product – focus on that. Then, focus on monetization with an eye on enhancing the product, not distracting prospective customers with flashy hacks.
