TODAY’S DEEP DIVE
Photos from Ikea's new campaign of anime art aimed at Gen Z college students

📰 TL;DR: Affordable home brand Ikea has long been synonymous with college and early adulthood living – from decorating your dorm to furnishing your first apartment to making the perfect intro to DIY. Their latest TikTok ad campaign turns college moments into anime art to capture Gen Z consumers.

With Gen Z having a particularly deep interest in anime – Gen Z is watching more anime than any other generation – this campaign hits at their multifaceted interests alongside Ikea’s perfectly suited products. The campaign includes a series of “slice of life” clips showing college students finding the joy in simpler moments of life with the help of tools from Ikea.

💡 Insight: Lean into your public perception. Ikea could easily try to position themselves as something they’re not to try and compete with other trendy home retailers. It would be understandable if they wanted to shy away from their reputation as the “cheap college brand”… but instead they’re leaning into it and owning it.

By going even deeper and investing in the current demographic’s interests, they’re showing they’re relatable and fun. Plus it’s also an ode to their creativity and the artistic lens that often takes shape through their products.

Don’t shy away from owning your reputation. Ikea’s truly gaining their audience’s interest and trust by shining a spotlight on the experience of their products once people make it out of their store.
