💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Meme marketing is one of those things that seems easy and like anyone could do, but in actuality, it’s quite a skill. And a skill that’s worthwhile, as it’s one of the highest-leverage, low-lift pieces of marketing possible. If you’ve been wanting to try it out but just can’t seem to get it right, meme lord Jason Levin has it all broken down for you.
💡 Insight - Step 1: Learn the industry and trends. You should only make memes about industries you’re deep in. If you’re not quite sure what that looks like for your brand, get your research hat on and start figuring out what’s going on.
Step 2: Know the problems. According to Levin, “Good memes come from problems your industry faces.” The best memes are ones that help voice all of our complaints and speak honestly and transparently.
Step 3: Know who you cannot offend. Levin says that offending some people is sometimes inevitable with meme marketing (think of how many offensive comedians you know that are truly hilarious). But you have to be thoughtful and selective about who you’re offending and who you never, ever want to poke fun at.
Step 4: Embrace the cringe. Memes often toe the line between cringe and incredible. Sometimes your meme might even go viral for being cringe. It’s okay.
Step 5: Master the tools. Speed is the most important thing with meme marketing. You always want to be on the cusp of trends – even if that means using free tools like Canva or Imgflip. Don’t overthink the tools.
