Today’s Insight

📰 TL;DR - A new report from Similarweb and Axios confirms that referral traffic from Facebook and X has continued to decline over the past year. Here’s some of the deeper datapoints:

  • Facebook referrals to news sites have dropped by ~80% since Sept 2020

  • X traffic to news sites has dropped by ~60% since Sept 2020

  • Views of Facebook posts with links have declined by ~50% in 2 yrs

💡 Insight - So, what can we all do when the platforms are openly deprioritizing referral traffic and content with links?

Reconsider what social media is doing for your branding efforts. Could the platforms be better used for driving awareness or more subscribers instead of towards web traffic?

If social media still fits in your marketing mix, consider pivoting your content to what suits their algorithm. Otherwise, you’re potentially wasting time and energy on something that will never get surfaced to your audience.

Recognize you’re not going to get the same referral numbers that you used to. That might mean investing more in other avenues. It could mean abandoning social entirely. But it’s important to understand the reality of the situation.
