🗞 TL;DR - Hershey’s partnered with AI services provider Chalice Custom Algorithms to better understand how they could fill in gaps during such a key candy-buying holiday. We’ve summarized the takeaways for you and listed out how you might be able to replicate these research efforts at scale.
💡 Insight - First off, Hershey’s strategically planned this research for a time where hitting sales goals is imperative. The stakes are higher, so they have to do anything they can to stand out. That’s a good time to try to go the extra mile with strategies – when you know you’ve gotta give it all you’ve got.
Chalice aimed to provide Hershey with insights that could “engage the movable middle of shoppers” and help Hershey’s stand out during Halloween candy overwhelm. The AI-enabled tools rely on different algorithms to monitor platforms for inventory availability, impression pricing, and campaign pacing. While these algorithms are custom to Chalice, summarizing insights from platforms like Meta or The Trade Desk with your own model like ChatGPT can help identify gaps in the market for your brand to capitalize on.
While AI can maximize the impact of the effort, some elements of the analysis was more cumbersome. Hershey manually shared zip code data weekly with Chalice to see which stores were underperforming compared to a national average and compare them against media impressions in different markets. This outside-the-box thinking and manual effort can be cloned by any brand with a pulse on these metrics, looking to stand out from the crowd.
