Talk of the Town

  • Add another lawsuit to Google’s list for alleged anti-competitive behavior. The publisher, Gannett, is the largest U.S. newspaper publisher (by daily circulation) and claims that Google’s monopoly over the digital ad space has come at the expense of publishers and readers. The lawsuit echoes arguments made by the U.S. Department of Justice in its second lawsuit against Google.

  • Takeaway: It’s a conundrum, that’s for sure. Google’s success is legendary and should be admired, but have they grown too big to allow for anyone else to fairly fight up against them? It’s a complicated question that I’m sure will take the U.S. Govt plenty of time to answer.

  • If a trend using your product goes viral on TikTok, you’ve got to lean into it. Just ask Chipotle who felt the power of influencer Keith Lee and later produced their own Keithadilla based on the menu hack, or Tarte Cosmetics with the launch of their newest product launch which sold out 3 months of inventory in 4 weeks. But this phenomenon only fuels the fire of TikTok’s power and drives businesses into a never-ending loop of following virality.

  • Takeaway: TikTok trends can skyrocket business sales overnight with one viral video. But is that the only way to achieve success using TikTok? Absolutely not. This endless cycle is beyond any one brand to break, but there’s zero shame on any company who decides to capitalize on algorithmic success.

Today’s Growth Tip

  • Camera company Nikon is running an ad campaign in Peru highlighting the natural beauty of the world amidst new fascination with AI-generated images. The campaign features surreal real-life images captured with Nikon cameras from all around the world with text overlays of the AI prompts people might use to create them (spoiler: the prompts aren’t what you’d think they might be).

  • Make It Yours: Ask yourself whether AI innovations truly fit in your product or services. If the answer’s no, take a note from Nikon and don’t force it. Embrace what makes your brand unique without the newest, shiniest toy. You might find that’s actually how you’ll stand out from the competition.
