🗞 TL;DR - If you’ve scrolled on TikTok recently, you know that it’s almost impossible to scroll without getting bombarded by content pushing you towards ordering on TikTok Shop. Vox gathered tech analysts together to set the matter straight: pushy advertising is crucial to the TikTok Shop business model.

💡 Insight - While TikTok declined to comment on the story, experts told Vox that TikTok definitely pays attention to how an increase in TikTok Shop ads can simultaneously lead to an increase in customer complaints (and a decrease in time spent on the app). TikTok can then use this knowledge to inform its ad strategy and keep people on the app (and buying).

According to reports of Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, 8-10% of the app experience can be commerce-related content before users start leaving. But, as Tech Buzz China’s tech analyst Rui Ma notes, “it’s possible that Chinese people are more tolerant of ads and this number could be too high for Americans.”

Some may look at TikTok Shop’s model and think this means you can continue to push your advertising on users, and they’ll put up with a lot. For all the complaints about TikTok’s ads, people are still super addicted to the app. But it’s also possible that such an approach can backfire, especially when you’ve found strong success providing users with hyper-targeted, relevant content directly for them – repetitive ads just don’t hit the same.
