🗞 TL;DR - The video-sharing platform, YouTube, is planning a big year as it celebrates its twentieth (!) birthday in 2025. CEO Neal Mohan published his annual key focus areas to enhance user experience and support creators—and the year ahead presents tons of opportunities to amplify your YouTube strategy.

💡 Insight - Here’s the scoop on YouTube’s plans to remain the “epicenter of culture” and how they can impact your marketing efforts:

  1. Increased investment in the podcast boom. YouTube is now the most frequently used service for listening to podcasts in the U.S. and Mohan plans to lean into this growth by rolling out tools to support podcasters, improve monetization for creators, and make it even easier to discover podcasts.

  2. Expanded monetization pathways. The platform is investing in new ways for creators to partner with brands to maximize their efforts and build their YouTube presence. While ads remain the key revenue for most, shopping recommendations and channel memberships are quickly becoming popular alternate options.

  3. Connected TV viewing. Mohan noted that TV has officially surpassed mobile as the primary device for YouTube viewing in the U.S. Taking full advantage of this milestone, they plan on launching a “second screen experience” that lets you use your phone to interact with the video you’re watching on TV. 

  4. More AI integration. YouTube’s current AI features include background image generation and AI soundtrack options. They plan to expand their AI capabilities with features like video thumbnails, title suggestions, and AI-generated audio in other languages.

📈 TikTok was among the most downloaded apps in January. Despite its ban in the U.S., TikTok was the most downloaded app last month, a title that Instagram held for over a year. The app has been gaining popularity in Southeast Asian markets like Indonesia.
