💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Hashtags, which were once a non-negotiable for including in social content, now feel a bit aimless in the modern social media landscape. The answer varies across platforms, but in general the consensus sounds like… you probably don’t need them anymore.
💡 Insight - It’s best to look at how each platform treats and thinks of hashtags to understand whether you should still be using them in your content.
On LinkedIn? Maybe. They said they still support hashtags but they, “also consider conversation topics and keywords to help surface relevant information for professionals looking to advance in their careers.”
On X? No. Or to put it more accurately, absolutely not. Just this week, X owner Elon Musk directly urged users to stop adding hashtags to their updates because “the system doesn’t need them anymore and they look ugly.”
On Threads? Maybe, but you can only use one per post. According to chief Adam Mosseri, hashtags can help align your posts with certain communities, which have some discovery benefits. But in actuality, the reach benefits are pretty slim.
On Instagram? Unclear. One may assume Mosseri’s words ring true for IG as well – helping users discover new content and communities. But at the same time, they’ve removed the option to follow hashtags due to their irrelevance.
It’s true that major advances in semantic search capacity have diminished hashtags’ ability to help content discovery, and they probably don’t help to drive more reach and engagement on platforms. The bottom line? You might want to #DumpTheTag.
