Marketing’s top news, tips, & tools of the day
🏛️ Brands are bracing for a new state-led privacy landscape
📰 TL;DR - Last month, Iowa became the 6th state to pass consumer data privacy legislation, and there will likely be more to follow with states like New York and Texas considering some form of consumer privacy legislation. How does this concern us marketers? Well, the landscape for advertising and social media keeps getting muddier with new privacy rules. Plus more states showing interest means there may be a more narrow path towards federal privacy legislation.
💡 Insight - This piece is a result of panel discussions from this week’s Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Public Policy & Legal Summit. With the impending potential of the TikTok ban, government concerns over Meta and Google, and a growing public fear of privacy use… the entire conversation of how marketers and advertisers will survive the impending changes is a slow burn. Keep your eyes peeled on this one.

🤡 Brands don’t really know what to do with April Fools’ Day anymore
📰 TL;DR - It’s a fun tradition in the marketing world that every year on April 1, one brand takes the April Fools shenanigans a little too far and gets roasted for it. As a result, many brands have shied away from taking part in the holiday… but some are still investing time & money into relevant content (my fave of this year: Duolingo/Peacock’s faux dating show).
According to brands who have continued to take part in the fun, the key is when “the idea is silly enough to know it’s a joke, but good enough quality to make you question yourself.”
💡 Insight - Many brands noted that they saw an overwhelmingly positive response on organic social media in response to such content. It’s true that when a campaign is done really well and cleverly, it can be a slam dunk… but are you willing to risk your campaign coming off as out-of-touch and unnecessary??
