🗞 TL;DR - Social networking startup Bluesky just joined its rival platform Threads. Why? To infiltrate the competitor and capitalize on discussions on the rival app where users are threatening to leave Threads over its latest content moderation issues.
💡 Insight - First off, we need to take a moment to appreciate how petty and hilarious this is. Using a competitor’s app to take down a competitor? Hilarious and brilliant. Something that may, at face value, seem unintuitive – why give your competitor more traffic?
But that’s exactly it: Bluesky is jumping on the already existing traffic and coopting conversations that are already happening on Threads. They’re identifying user conversations about the downside of Threads and providing an alternative solution. That’s just smart.
Instead of shying away from your competition, maybe the solution is to get even closer to them. Find out what consumers are hating or loving about them, and offer your brand up as an alternative. It’s bold for sure, but that’s why it’s so effective. No one expects the call to come from inside the house.
