💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Bold, bright, impossible-to-ignore branding is taking over social media feeds and retail store aisles. “Dopamine Design” is the new branding shift that’s attracting consumers of emerging brands like Goodles, Omsom, and Fly by Jing.
💡 Insight - Since 2018-ish, popular brands have been rebranding with minimalistic aesthetics that include natural tones, hand-drawn illustrations, and clean fonts to evoke a soothing, comfortable, and approachable feel. But once every brand on the shelf was dressed in greige, it became imperative for brands to stand out.
Enter Dopamine Design. While minimalistic design removed friction to help consumers find clarity, Dopamine design makes the decision for consumers. Or, as some may put it, it’s the TikTok-ification of packaging. Like on TikTok, brands on the shelf might have milliseconds to grab your attention and make you feel something. These brands use psychological triggers like bright colors, bold fonts, and eye-popping patterns to light up your brain’s pleasure receptors.
And, of course, this is in large part due to the shift of younger consumers from Millennials to Gen Z. Millennials wanted brands to relate to something larger by showing where products came from and how they were made. But Gen Z has shorter attention spans and wants visual excitement. Expect more brands to swap their minimalist Millennial redesigns for something hard-hitting and joyful.
