Marketing’s top news, tips, & tools of the day

⚡️
Talk of the Town

  • Traditionally, Discord users were identified with a hash sign and four numbers, which allowed for duplicate names. But in the next couple weeks, they’ll be making the move to Twitter-style @ handles with unique identifiers.

  • Discord claims this will help reduce confusion and errors in connecting with the right people, but many users think it will do the exact opposite.

  • Takeaway: With how many changes social networks have been going through lately, it’s clearly evident that every change will garner support and revolt. The key for leaders is knowing when to fold one way or another and be prepared to give answers to the revolting crowd.

  • These three producers make up some of the biggest podcast networks in the U.S. and yet Slate and NPR’s shows combined only averaged around 250 views per video last week – the NYTimes didn’t do much better, only receiving around 1k views on average for their most popular show The Daily.

  • Takeaway: YouTube Music, especially for podcasters, doesn’t seem to be there yet. That’s not to say it couldn’t be a successful platform for the right brand or at a different time, but it’s still in the early days… and maybe not every media platform can be good for every media type.

New Growth Insights

  • Burger King removed the “burger” from its flagship U.K. restaurant in Leicester Square ahead of the coronation of King Charles III this past weekend. As part of the campaign aimed at tourists traveling to London for the royal event, BK hijacked several billboards with the copy: “From one to another” in addition to social media promotions.

  • Takeaway: This is a really great example of brands having fun jumping on public events without being too over-the-top or polarizing. The last thing you want to do is upset the new monarch… but who wouldn’t enjoy a little cheeky campaign?

  • Currently in beta, the feature encourages users to share your ideas to help the AI-powered assistant get you started with a first draft. Thought starters include sharing your opinion on a new trend, giving advice on careers or projects, and elaborating on new learnings.

  • Takeaway: LinkedIn’s been toying with AI features for awhile now, so expect them to continue releasing new tools. If used correctly (i.e. with a real human editing & writing alongside it), this could be a really cool feature for solopreneurs and small biz owners starting to get into content.
