Marketing’s top news, tips, & tools of the day

🚀
Today’s Growth Tip

  • Instagram published a blog by Adam Mosseri explaining that IG uses a variety of algorithms and processes to surface content and personalize the experience. Overall, posts are ranked based on factors like user activity (likes, comments, shares, and saves) based on the post location and the account who posted it. The algorithm then makes its own assumptions about what content will fuel more engagement.

  • Make it yours: Instead of jumping on the latest IG hack, listen to what the actual leaders are saying and ensure your content strategy is prioritizing content that is engaging, shareable, and relatable. Review your IG plans for the next month – are you creating content people want to share & engage with? Are you engaging daily with your audience? Are you sharing others’ accounts and truly embodying the social experience?

Talk of the Town

  • 40+ school districts are suing social media companies like Meta, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube over their addictive and negative impact on students. In total, there are about 235 plaintiffs including school districts, individuals, and local & state governments seeking monetary damages for resources spent on the mental health crisis. Legal experts expect it’ll take many years to resolve.

  • Takeaway: This could set a true precedent for how public resources are being taken up by the often destructive mental health effects social media incurs, especially on young people. But, even the article notes that, social media may not be the big bad problem it’s being made out to be.

  • Move over Substack, there’s another competitor in town. WordPress’ newsletter service was first launched in December and allows bloggers to send posts via email to their audience. Now, they’ll also have the option to add income-generating streams to those newsletters. All WP users have access to the monetizing feature but those on paid WP plans will get lower to 0 transaction fees on subscriptions.

  • Takeaway: WP powers 43% of the web, including its open source version. Let that sink in. If you’re already operating a blog or website on WP, this is a great opportunity to bring everything under one roof (and avoid having to manage 2 separate platforms). Huge move for the WP team!
