Marketing’s top news, tips, & tools of the day

We’re taking a brief break for this week’s U.S. holiday – see you on Thursday!

⚡️
Talk of the Town

  • The “Browsing” feature is only available to subscribes of ChatGPT Plus, but allows users to input queries related to current events and “other information that extends beyond ChatGPT’s original training data.” But even though OpenAI has been, well, open about its partnership with Microsoft, many people are saying the link to the search engine makes for an inferior product feature than using a search like Google.

  • Takeaway: Google or Bing often feels like the age old Apple or Android debate – everyone’s got a personal favorite. But back in 2011, Bing was found to potentially unfairly serve more Microsoft-related results than Google and Stanford recently showed that Bing’s top results contain an “alarming” amount of misinformation… so maybe there’s a reason to be wary of this new feature.

  • Over the weekend, Elon Musk noted that Twitter accounts would be limited how many posts per day the user can read “to address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation.” Limits are imposed based on type of account, though he’s updated the limits throughout the last 24 hours. As it stands when we’re drafting this newsletter on Sunday afternoon, verified accounts are limited to reading 10k posts per day, unverified accounts to 1k posts/day, and new unverified accounts to 500/day.

  • Takeaway: It’s still not entirely clear why Elon’s doing this, but many think it points to his commitment to increase the monetization of Twitter. By putting these limits, users might be more apt to subscribe to Twitter Blue to see near endless posts. But it’s a feature that’s driving frustration with audiences on both sides.

Today’s Growth Tip

  • Chinese eCommerce company Shein has gained massive success on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, but remains an ethical problem child with allegations of stealing designers’ work to violating labor laws. As they’re eying an IPO, they recruited popular influencers to visit one of their factories in China and share their “pleasant” experiences. The posts were met with huge backlash from audiences who called out the influencers on showing a “highly curated, favorable image of the company.”

  • Make It Yours: Influencer campaigns can be powerful in both positive and negative ways, so don’t rush into them if it doesn’t work for your brand. Some businesses include inherently tough moments – like a vet business having to put an animal down. While it’s easy to see the popularity of influencer marketing and want to take part, sometimes the best move is to know when not to jump into a trend that doesn’t make sense for your brand.
