📰 TL;DR - “Friendly fraud,” also known as first-party fraud, is when customers file a fraud claim or charge-back even though they’re satisfied with a purchase. It’s often committed intentionally to get an item free or to retaliate against a business.
New research shows that 42% of Gen Z admit to engaging in friendly fraud, significantly more than any other generation.
💡 Insight - How can you protect your biz from friendly fraud? Here are a few tips:
Have clear cancellation and return policies in place to prevent confusion
Offer alternatives so that shoppers don’t immediately resort to filing charge-backs
Respond to customer service disputes promptly and offer refunds or alternatives quickly
Make sure to maintain detailed records of customer transactions to refute unfounded charge-back claims from card networks
