🗞 TL;DR - If you weren’t glued to your TV yesterday, you may have been endlessly scrolling your social feeds seeing reactions to the big game. In times like these, brands can really stand apart from the crowd – even if you don’t have a cool $8M to drop on an official ad spot. Here’s how brands can utilize social media to engage with big events like the big game.
💡 Insight - It’s true that many brands who take the top spot on these platforms are ones who have paid for an official commercial spot. They often use social media to maximize their ad spend and saturate the market no matter where you’re watching coverage of the event. Rewards app Fetch went so far as to hinge their entire ad campaign on a social media livestream where the CEO gave away $10k every minute on the stream.
These multilayered campaigns are smart because they help brands reach audiences on social media who may not be watching the event on TV and they help bring TV audiences to the brand on social media, thus maximizing their effort and spend.
If you can’t shell out $7-8M for an ad, you’re in luck: social media allows you to integrate your brand into the conversation at no cost. My favorite example? Oreo’s “You Can Still Dunk in the Dark” tweet when the light went out in the Super Bowl in 2013. Or more recently, brands like Betches or Girlboss – they’re still able to jump into the trending conversations by pinpointing exciting topics, swiftly turning moments into memes, and engaging in public conversation. Whether it’s the big game, an award show, or any other trending event, don’t count yourself out if you can’t get in on an official spot. Get creative and jump into the conversation!
