š TikTok Launches Branded Effects For Marketers
š° TL;DR - While TikTokās future in the U.S. still hangs in limbo, the app announced a new product called Branded Effects that will allow brands to collaborate with TikTok effect creators to design custom effects (like augmented reality [AR] experiences) to bolster digital marketing campaigns. The tool is part of TikTokās AR development platform, Effect House, which offers a suite of solutions for creators to get started with building AR effects.

š Could The U.S. Ban Social Media Advertising to Users Under 17?
š° TL;DR - Utah has become the first state to enact laws regulating kidsā use of social media starting March 1, 2024. The first law requires social media platforms to verify a userās age and imposes a curfew on users under 18 without guardian consent. Plus social media platforms cannot collect childrenās data or display targeted ads to them. The second law requires social media companies to ensure their platforms are not designed to cause addiction to minors, otherwise they face potentially being sued.
š” Insight - While these laws are both in the distant future and only in Utah, itās a bold move for a state to take action on restricting minorsā use of social platforms, especially playing alongside Congressā recent TikTok hearing where youth safety was a major concern. Also, this move could be the first of manyā¦ apparently Arkansas, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Texas are all considering similar legislation.
