Tuesday's news, tips, & tools you need to know

🖥️ Meta’s Building a Decentralized Twitter Alternative

đź“° TL;DR - Codename P92, Meta’s exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. There’s no timeframe on a release date, but the initial concept sounds weirdly familiar to a certain bird app… Current Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri is supposedly leading the charge on the new app and users will be able to log in with their existing Instagram credentials.

đź’ˇ Insight - Meta’s been pushing towards decentralization for awhile, so launching into the social media space feels like a natural next step. Decentralized social networks are becoming increasingly popular, but they still have similar complex issues of traditional social networks – most challenges are around how they’re utilized by brands and advertisers alongside content moderation concerns. If Meta’s moving into this space, it’s not a hot take to assume they’ll try to figure out how to monetize it with advertisers as well. Could be a huge brand opp here one day.

🍪 TikTok & Dentsu’s Solution To No Cookie Tracking

đź“° TL;DR - TikTok has partnered with global marketing agency Dentsu Digital to help marketers continue to track engagement data, despite the gradual shift from cookie tracking. Their partnership integrates TikTok’s Events API into Dentsu Digital’s cookie-independent X-Stack Connect measurement platform.

According to TikTok, “X-Stack Connect is a server-side measurement platform that helps advertisers measure online behaviors on websites using access logs with user consent. Profiles can be built around actions like website visits, logins, and form entry information.”

đź’ˇ Insight - Dentsu’s one of the biggest players in the game, so they definitely know their sh*t. If the tracking is as useful as it seems, this could be an incredibly strong tool to integrate into your marketing stack – especially in the midst of cookie tracking phase out and iOS 14.

🤖 Microsoft’s Launching ChatGPT 4 With AI Videos

đź“° TL;DR - Just when you get to know someone, they release a new version of themselves… and Microsoft announced that GPT-4 will be released as early as next week. GPT-4 is an upgrade to ChatGPT, the AI tool sweeping the nation, and could include the ability to create AI-generated videos from simple text prompts. Currently, ChatGPT can only reply in text form.

đź’ˇ Insight - In Microsoft’s presentation of the upgrade, they used an example of how a call center could use GPT-4 to convert phone conversations between employees and customers into text, saving time and effort in post-call summaries. Could also see instances of this helping with process documentation, training new employees, or generating idea brainstorms.

đź’ż Vinyl Albums Are Officially Back In Business

đź“° TL;DR - While streaming still accounts for 84% of music revenue, last year’s vinyl record album sales outpaced those of CDs for the first time since 1987. Vinyl albums earned $1.2 billion compared to $483 million for CDs and $13.3 billion for streaming music subscriptions. All of this makes an even darker day for paid digital downloads which accounted for just 3% of all music revenue in 2022.

đź’ˇ Insight - Vinyl is definitely having a moment, which is wild in a world so fueled by digital and virtual experiences. But vinyl, unlike CDs, has become a unique, treasured piece of physical music. There’s a special quality to the sound, a nostalgic tone to the music. Many artists have leaned into the craze with beautiful artwork on the sleeves holding the records and limited edition colored vinyl. It just goes to show you that not everything will die for digital. Sure, the ease of Spotify is hard to beat, but consumers are looking for products to make them feel something, the perfect physical item can surpass logic & efficiency.
