🫠 The U.S. Congress TikTok Hearing Was Pretty Tough To Watch TBH

📰 TL;DR - TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew sat with U.S. Congress last Thursday for a 4 hour hearing intended to discuss questions regarding the app’s privacy and safety features… but it swiftly turned into a Xenophobic attack on Chew with many members of congress speaking with their minds already made up on TikTok.

The top concerns surrounded safety of children consuming content on the app and American data being accessed and used by the Chinese Communist Party. But the top questions of the hearing included: “Why do you need to know where a user’s eyes are to use a sunglasses filter?” and “Does TikTok access my home wifi network?”

💡 Insight - Users of TikTok responded to the hearing in two ways: first, making memes and fun of the wild comments out-of-touch members of Congress made (see top questions above) and second, truly being disappointed in Congress’ lack of understanding on such an important decision. Unfortunately, TikTok users aren’t the ones making the final call here and if the hearing was any indication, our time on the app may be ticking…

🐦 Twitter Leaves Blue Checks To The Blue Subs

📰 TL;DR - Twitter announced that they’ll soon be removing verified blue checkmarks from legacy accounts that had been verified as “notable” prior to Elon Musk’s reign. Starting April 1, the only accounts that will have checkmarks on their account are ones that are subscribed to Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organizations plan.

Under the Verified Orgs subscription plan, companies must pay $1k/mo (+ tax) to keep their gold or grey checkmark badge. They’ll also get all the benefits of Twitter Blue including tweet editing (within 30 mins), 4k character tweets, and prioritized rankings in conversations.

💡 Insight - This is a BOLD move by Elon. He’s said before that Twitter needs significant subscription revenue to survive today’s challenging economy, but this is a massive change to an original concept of Twitter. Plus with organizational budgets already strapped, it’s hard to imagine some orgs (thinking of non-profits) able to shell out the money to keep that checkmark… Will your company pay $1k/mo for your verification?

🛍️ Google Cloud’s Discovery AI Joins Shopify

📰 TL;DR - Shopify’s partnership with Google just got better… they’re bringing Google Cloud’s Discovery AI tools to enterprise brands using Shopify’s Commerce Components. The new features will help Shopify’s enterprise retailers tackle search abandonment by integrating directly with their online stores – for the record, search abandonment costs retailers globally more than $2 trillion annually.

💡 Insight - It’s always a fun time when two major players in the game collaborate on tools to make our marketing lives easier. Retailers should be excited about the cost-saving potential these AI tools can bring, especially when combined natively within Shopify’s own tools. The only con? Waiting until it (hopefully) becomes available to non-enterprise retailers 🥲
