Friday's news, tips, & tools you need to know

🔎 Out: Google Ad Sales Revenue

đź“° TL;DR - Google’s parent company Alphabet announced is Q4 earnings yesterday and it wasn’t great. Q4 2022 saw their first decrease in ad revenue for the second time in the company’s history (the first coming at the start of the pandemic) bringing in $59b, down 3.6% from the same period in 2021.

💡Insight - We have already reported on Google laying off many of their ad manager support staff but with this news wouldn’t be surprised to see some CPCs decreased on tech and consumer-related keywords. And more interestingly, YouTube ad sales decreased by more than 7% year over year despite watch time increasing in recent quarters. Hopefully, we can take advantage of some low CPCs and CPMs as Alphabet likely tries to win us back!

đź‘» In: Snapchat User Growth & Premium Subs

đź“° TL;DR - Snapchat announced in their Q4 earnings that they added 12 million new active users last quarter and a large increase in Snapchat+ subscriptions. On the other side of things, their ad revenue missed expectations. They said too much of their ad revenue comes from the US & Canada while other large social ad platforms are more diversified across multiple regions.

💡Insight - The last line above leads us to believe Snap will aggressively court advertisers in other countries, likely with low CPMs we take advantage of! Snap still remains a “fringe” ad platform to us but we are curious to hear if anyone has good case studies from advertising the platform. Let us know!

📦️ In: Amazon’s Ad Network Continues To Crush

đź“° TL;DR - Amazon’s Q4 earnings beat estimates across the board. Most interesting to us and our community is that Amazon’s advertising revenue jumped 19% year over year which is par for the course at this point. It seems every 90 days we are reporting how fast Amazon’s ad business is growing.

💡Insight - If you are in e-commerce and haven’t checked out Amazon’s ad offerings you are really missing out! It seems their ad rates are growing as fast as their revenue so get in now while you can. It’s a slept-on DTC ad channel!

🤖 How To Use ChatGPT For Google Ads

đź“° TL;DR - Search Engine Land just dropped an amazingly helpful article listing 15 different ChatGPT prompts that Google Ads investors / users can use to improve their Google Ads performance. Three of our favorites are:

  1. Providing “almost-useable” inspiration for responsive display ads with this prompt: “I need to create some responsive display ads for a Google Ads campaign. Please suggest images, headlines and descriptions for a meatless shepherd’s pie with spokesperson Paul McCartney. Lyric puns are acceptable.”

  2. Optimize your landing page headline to increase your quality score with this prompt: “Rewrite a headline for [LP URL] that explains [unique value proposition] and includes the phrase [keyword phrase].”

  3. Write entire ads RSA ads with this prompt: “Create two Google Ads in an RSA format (using multiple headlines and descriptions) for an A/B test for “Ms. Hvac’s HVACs.” Explain why the ads would make a good test.”

đź“Ť Pinterest Laying Off 150 People

đź“° TL;DR - All the cool kids are doing it right? Sorry! We had to. Pinterest just announced they are laying off 150 people (less than 5% of its workforce) but didn’t disclose who was getting let go. We really hope they are not part of the ad platform because it needs some work but…

💡Insight - We continue to hear standout success stories from advertisers and brands growing on the back of Pinterest. Check it out! There’s no time like the present.
