💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - You might be thinking of SEO when you’re building a new website, but have you thought of it when picking your domain name? Search Engine Land has tips on how to ensure you’re selecting an SEO-friendly domain, whether you’re starting up a new site or revamping an already established one.
💡 Insight - The absolute most important thing you need to keep in mind when picking a domain, for general and SEO purposes, is ensuring it’s easy for your target audience to type, spell, and say out loud. There shouldn’t be any miscommunication when people are trying to relay your domain name. To test this, get a random sample of 10 people and quickly mention the domain. Have them write it down or spell it out loud. Rework it until people get it right.
Some top-level domains (TLDs), such as .edu or .gov, inherently carry trust with consumers since they’re pre-vetted by larger institutions. If you don’t fall into one of these pre-vetted orgs, you should get the country’s TLD and use the proper schema for the area you serve. While TLDs like .io or .co can look cool and sleek, using your country’s TLD can help you start to rank in your area more easily.
It’s not necessary to include keywords in your domains, and using hyphens to incorporate multiple keywords can lead to a poor user experience. Plus, domain names with multiple words separated by hyphens can appear unprofessional. Also, you don’t need to start your domain with a “1” or an “A” unless it actually makes sense for your brand.
Lastly, don’t lean into too much branding. If anything changes, you’ll lose your branding and backlinks once things change. Make sure whatever you choose is intuitive and will last the test of time.
