💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Turns out de-influencing, or the antithesis of traditional influencer culture that promotes consumerism, is really having a moment. According to a new Harris Poll study, 69% of American social media users say they have chosen not to purchase items on social platforms. But it’s not all bad news for brands – just because people may be swayed less by FOMO, there’s still a place for intentional purchasing.

💡 Insight - Much of the de-influencing moment comes from a rebellion against influencers, not necessarily brands. The trend seemingly sparked with a video from beauty TikToker Mikayla Nogueira where she used fake eyelashes to attempt to promote L’Oreal’s product. The backlash was so strong, Nogueira took a break for the platform and made an awkward apologetic return.

The movement is also a rebellion against unnecessary consumerism. Many accounts have been made now calling out other influencers who promote overspending and shopaholic tendencies. They’re rebelling against influencers who trick viewers into thinking they need to live aesthetic lives and buy products with no intent.

But here’s the thing: shopping on social media is still quite popular. In the past year, 38% of Americans have reported buying products they saw on social media. Audiences, especially Gen Z, are happy to get product recommendations from social media and online, they just want the recs to be authentic and honest. If you can curate a transparent, authentic brand and foster brand loyalty, you’ll find that de-influencing isn’t your enemy.
