📰 TL;DR: For most of the last 10 years, many of us have been living off what the New York Times calls the “millennial lifestyle subsidy” – a world of cheap service led by startups trying to lure in customers by operating at a loss. While consumers like us enjoyed the benefits of cheaper products, those times are coming to an end.
Silicon Valley is finally catching up. Now, not only will consumers have to pay up, but law professors are also arguing whether such startup behavior is illegal. As price increases continue across popular services like Airbnb, Uber, and Netflix, businesses across the board will have to be prepared for consumer impacts.
💡 Insight: Discounting isn’t everything to capture younger audiences. In a study of millennial loyalty, 68% of millennials said reliability and/or durability is an important factor in contributing to their loyalty to a company.
So, while it would be great to live in a world with cheaper rideshares, vacation rentals, or subscription services – it’s not the be all, end all it might seem.
Younger consumers want transparency, clarity, and honesty. Prioritize those core values and you might just survive the reckoning of subsidized Silicon Valley brands.
