TODAY’S DEEP DIVE
A screenshot of Charlie Light's viral tweet next to icons depicting the conflicting feelings of getting success while going viral but not the right type of success.

📰 TL;DR: Viral content has long been the goal for many aspiring brands with social media’s governance over trends resulting in boosted product revenue. Just think of the thrill when you hit “post” and see immediate likes, comments, and shares coming in.

But Founder and Ghostwriter Charlie Light argues that going viral isn’t what it’s quite cracked up to be. Light posted a tweet last week that got 70k+ likes, 4M+ impressions, and even a reply from Elon Musk himself. Here’s the funny thing: he only gained 150 followers from the viral success and ZERO leads for his business directly. Meanwhile a tweet he wrote targeted towards his content niche (with 10% of the impressions) led to dozens of leads and $500k+ in business.

💡 Insight: Create realistic, concrete goals for your content, social media, and business as a whole. If you say you want to “go viral,” what does that mean to you?

What does “going viral” translate to in concrete metrics? You’ve gotta know what to measure against and aim for if you want to consider it a success.

Why do you want to go viral? Is it to impress your fellow entrepreneurs and friends? Or is it to actually garner revenue and interest in your biz?

Could your business be better off investing time & energy into focused content directed at high-quality, engaged leads instead of chasing internet clout?

Because here’s the thing: if your only goal is to go viral on social media, you might be left disappointed and directionless when you get to the other side…
