🗞 TL;DR - Google’s AI Overviews have gotten extremely popular, but have you considered how they might affect your SEO strategy? Search Engine Journal synthesized 19 original analyses of AI Overviews (AIOs) and summarized them into five key questions to help you understand the impact of the feature on your SEO efforts.
💡 Insight - First, how often does Google show AI Overviews? The coverage varies greatly by industry, but studies found it anywhere from 6.7% of the time across millions of keywords (via Semrush) to 47% of 120,000 keywords (Botify).
What triggers AI Overviews? The common theory is that AIOs mostly disrupt informational searches with most studies finding they show on 99.2% of these searches – compared with only 4% of transactional searches. Longer queries (over 5 words) were also found to be more likely to trigger AIOs across multiple studies.
How do AI Overviews impact click-through rates and SEO traffic? AIOs push organic results down significantly, in theory because AIOs occupy so much screen space it hurts organic results. The benefit is that AIOs cite their sources (usually 5-8 sources), which can be a huge driver for organic traffic.
How can you rank in AI Overviews? Focus on building your ranking and having good on-page SEO – keyword match doesn’t seem to matter as much as these factors.
And lastly, how should you rethink content creation for AI Overviews? Keep in mind the right formats and where you publish content. The average AIO is around 90-170 characters and contain lists. Prominently cited domains include YouTube, Reddit, and Quora.

📝 Meta outlined how its Community Notes will function. Similar to X’s moderation model, the feature will allow users to be in control of what is and is not flagged as false information across its apps, though it will not extend to ads.
